Adhesives
Adhesives are used for adding durability to knots, to glue stones or flatbacks to findings, or even to make beads! Find the adhesive that works best for your project.
Crystal Cement is an adhesive type with a precision applicator. Mainly used in watch repair, crystal cements are also great for beading because of the waterproof quality. With the precision applicator, it's also easy to apply to the tiny little knots in seed bead stitching projects. Dry time can take up to 20 minutes, and these cements work well with most types of threads.
Gels are cyanoacrylate ester (more commonly sold under the name brand of "Super Glue"). Thick, non-drip formulas won't spill or flow so they prevent you from accidentally gluing beads together instead of the knot. Many types come with a precision applicator. These types of glues dry almost instantly so once you dab it on, you can store your piece after a few seconds.
Epoxies are used mainly to bond gemstones to metals. They require mixing of multiple substances together and can take up to 24 hours to dry completely. The upside to this adhesive is that with the proper tools, you can dye the glue and make your own bead or pendants. It can get a little pricey, but the components you can make are truly unique
Fabric glues are sold under a wide variety of brand names and strengths. They dry clear, won't harden bead cording and they're water resistant. Using them on pieces for those who forget to (or won't) take of their jewelry in the shower or when swimming is almost a "must."
Craft cements are much like crystal cements, but they will yellow over time, becoming visible after they dry.
White glue (such as Elmer's) will hold for a while, however it is not permanent and the piece will likely fall apart in time, especially if the knots aren't tied properly in the first place.
Clear nail polish should never be used. Just like on your nails, nail polish will eventually chip or peel off! It's tempting to use because it's easy to brush onto knots, but use a glue instead that will last.
