Hematite
Nearly all hematite produced for beads is man-made. Natural hematite is a mineral, and is mined in North America, Brazil and Europe. Natural hematite is an iron ore, very dense in composition and heavy. In its natural state, it is steel black to red, with distinct reddish tinges and streaks. Beads created from man-made hematite (also known as hemalyke) are a shiny gray-black color, and can be cut and polished into many shapes and sizes of beads.
Hematite beads can be magnetized. Jewelry made with magnetized beads is said to relieve stress and pain from arthritis and other ailments. Some designs created with magnetic hematite can be made without a clasp, and multiple strands of bracelets or necklaces can be "held" together with the magnetic stones. It is important to note, however, that pregnant women and persons who have a pacemaker should NOT wear magnetic jewelry.
Hematite beads are set off well by pearls, turquoise, and amethyst. They are best paired with silver accents, and can be used themselves as accent or spacer beads. Because of the weight of the bead, plan designs carefully, ensuring that clasps are strong enough to hold the entire piece.
