Jump rings are key components in many beading projects, but they do require a little practice to open and close!
To open the ring:
Step 1: Pick up a jump ring using a chain nose pliers. Hold the jump ring just below the seam.
Step 2: Grasp the jump ring on the other side of the seam using another pliers (I like to use a bent-nosed pliers, but you can use another chain nosed.)
Step 3: Twist the pliers away from each other one pliers toward your body, one away from your body. Don't pull the ring apart at the seam this will distort the ring and it will be very difficult to get back together! Your opening should be just wide enough to slip a headpin loop, another jump ring, bead, or other object through.
To close the ring:
Step 4: Twist the pliers back toward each other, in the opposite direction you twisted them in Step 3. Be gentle, and be careful to preserve the round shape of the ring!
Step 5: Bring the ends of the ring just past each other, then rock slightly back and forth until you hear or feel a slight snapping. The ends should be tight together, show no gap, and feel smooth. A really good closure is difficult to see without a magnifying glass!
