OTT LAMP

So who is crazy enough to spend $60-140 on a task lamp for working on their jewelry? Well, not me.I used a 50% off coupon from Michael's to buy MY Ott lamp.

My first sentence tells a tale in and of itself - Ott Lamps are expensive. At these prices, I'd almost expect it to turn itself on, pull a drink out of the fridge, and heck yes, cut wire for me so I have rings ready at my beck and call. Unfortunately, it doesn't do any of those things, but it does give out some good rays.

The primary selling point of the Ott is that the light is more natural and easier on the eyes. After using my light for an extended period of time today, I'll have to say that I agree.I definitely didn't experience the eyestrain I usually do after a marathon session of assembling wire and beads. I also found that the basic design of the Craft Light that I purchased (the lower end $60 model) is very nice - the flat light fixture doesn't glare, nor does it need to be adjusted periodically if I shift my position.

The light also shows more "true" color - which is great for beaders coordinating stones or beads! No more turquoise that you "swore" was the same shade but turns out to be more green than the other beads in your piece.

My only complaint about the Ott is the perceived quality of the unit itself. To me, the plastic seems thin and cheap, and I'm concerned that it's not going to hold up. Because my light sits on my table (there is also a clamp option that can be used, but it doesn't work with my workbench), it's easy to knock over.

Replacement bulbs run around $25. As my light is brand new, I don't know from experience how long the bulb will last, but have to imagine it will run about the same as a standard fluorescent bulb. The entire unit has a one-year limited warranty.

Bottom line, despite the cheapness of the plastic casing, I like my Ott light, and wish I would have purchased one sooner. At the price I paid, using the 50% off coupon, I feel like I got a decent light at a good price. I am disappointed in the fact that it won't cut my rings for me, but I guess I'll get over that in time..
