Read The Granddaddy of Beading Magazines
Bead & Button
The "granddaddy" of beading magazines, Bead & Button is published by Kalmbach Publishing Company, which also publishes Art Jewelry and Bead Style, among other magazines.
Bead & Button targets intermediate to advanced beaders, with a heavy emphasis on seed beads and stitching techniques Typical contents include Tips and Techniques from readers, a gallery of readers' art work, projects (including patterns that are sent in by readers) and general articles on bead artists. Also included are basic techniques (including step-by-step stitch instructions, basic wire wrapping, crimping and jump ring opening). I find the basic techniques very easy to follow, and have taught myself several stitches based simply on Bead & Button's instructions.
While Bead & Button does cater to seed bead lovers, there are other jewelry making styles scattered throughout the magazine. A recent issue featured wire-wrap earrings, a simple strung necklace using floral buttons and Swarovski crystals, and a crystal cocktail ring that is more stringing than stitching.
Projects using delicate seed beads take the forefront in Bead & Button, and while some of the projects are labeled as "easy", they will present a challenge and take more time than some beaders are willing to give. The end results however, judging by the gorgeous photos in Bead & Button, are no less than breath-taking...even a simple stringer like myself is tempted to take up a needle and try out these techniques!
Bead & Button doesn't limit projects to jewelry...look for beaded flowers to place in a crystal vase for example. Additionally, the jewelry projects go beyond basic necklaces and bracelets, into beaded beads, beaded bails, broaches and rings.
Bottom line: if you are already into seed bead stitching techniques, Bead & Button is a must have magazine. For other beaders and jewelry makers looking for a new challenge, Bead & Button is a perfect stepping-stone. While the projects are challenging, instructions are detailed and photos provide enough direction for a motivated beginner to follow.
Bead & Button is published 6 times a year, with a single issue cost of $5.95 (US). United States subscription cost $28.95 one year, $55.95 two years, $79.95 three years. Canadian and international subscription prices are $38.00 one year, $74.00 two years, $107.00 three years.
