Step by Step Wire Jewelry
Sister publication to Step by Step Beads, Step by Step Wire Jewelry follows the same format for wire jewelry enthusiasts. From the first pages of the magazine, wire jewelry makers will find fabulous photographs, detailed instructions and material listings to guide them through several wire jewelry projects. Projects are rated to skill level, from beginner to advanced.
The magazine is published five times a year by Interweave Press at a subscription cost of $19.95 (US), $25.95 (International). Single copies are available at bookstores and other outlets for $5.99 each.
Step by Step Wire Jewelry features a few non-project articles artist profiles, wire working Q&A, basic tips and tricks of the trade, but the bulk of the magazine is devoted to project instructions. The Spring 2006 issue has ten projects, one beginner, five beginner/intermediate, three intermediate, one intermediate/advanced.. Techniques range from wire wrapping to chain maille to construction of a simple pin.
Project steps are numbered and easy to follow, with great detailed photographs for each step. A short bio of the artist who created the design is included at the end of the project.
Extras include a listing of classes, shops and supply sources, and book reviews (The Spring 2006 issue included Sharilyn Miller's Bead on a Wire, reviewed by Beading Help Web in January 2006).
Compared to purchasing a book by a single author (most how-to books are around $20), the price of Step by Step Wire Jewelry is similar, and you get the advantage of having several author's designs to choose from. If you'd like to have your knowledge of wire jewelry making expanded, and would like to spread out over a year's time, subscribing is a good move to make.
