Bricks and Mortar Shopping at Michael's
Michael's Arts and Crafts Stores are found throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to other craft and hobby supplies, Michael's carries an extensive line of beading materials in a range of styles, price points, and quantities that will appeal to many beaders.
My local Michael's stocks three 20' sections plus several endcaps of beading supplies, includign Beadalon products (beading wire from 7-strand to 49-strand and crimps), Stretch Magic and spools of various colored copper wire.
Bead selections include higher end Swarovski crystals, sterling silver components, semi-precious stones, resin, better quality acrylics and glass beads. Brands include Blue Moon Beads, Bead Gallery, and Fancy Finery. Sterling and base metal findings are available. I do not recommend the Westrim brand findings and metalicized plastic beads because of quality issues I have had with several styles. Additionally, Michael's carries plastic pony beads, plastic lace and other materials better suited for children's craft projects.
As a wire worker, I like that the store does carry a decent array of wire working tools and supplies. While most are of middle to lower end quality, they offer a good option for beaders to experiment and expand their horizons. Additionally, there is a good range of tools available at Michael's, including tools from Beadalon.
For the crafter who just wants to get started in beading, or for single projects, Michael's carries Design & Style kits. Kits include all materials and instructions necessary to make an earring/necklace set, or several pairs of earrings (tools not included).
Michael's stocks a good assortment of beading and jewelry making books. Most stores also offer in-store classes for a fee. Check with your local store for class availability and times.
Prices of beading materials at Michael's are reasonable - less than most local bead stores for crystals, but more than wholesale outlets or some online retailers. Watch weekly newspaper flyers for frequent sales on beading supplies and for the infamous 40% off one (non advertised) item. This coupon is great to use on higher priced items, such as tools or storage containers.
Michael's Arts and Crafts also has a web site, but product cannot be purchased on the site. The web site is a good source to view new products carried in the store, locate a Michael's store, talk to other beaders on the craft forums, or read about basic tips and techniques.
For hobbyists or craft jewelry makers, Michael's offers a very nice selection at reasonable prices. I have noticed over 2006 that the quality of many of their items has improved significantly. Professional jewelry makers and beaders may be less apt to spend "retail" dollars, but Michael's is a good option for emergency supplies, or for small quantities of quality beads.
